“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”

– 1 Corinthians 10:31

This post is all about the importance of working for God.

What does it mean to work for the Lord?

Have you read or heard the verse, “Put your heart and soul into every activity you do, as though you are doing it for the Lord himself and not merely for others.” – Colossians 3:23. I can’t help but think about the children’s sing-along song to help- memorize this verse every time I read it. Stating the obvious, but it is biblical to do work for God. But the good news is that it doesn’t have to be a separate task on your to do list. But in all things do it for God’s glory. As a mother with a little one this means serving God through my home cleaning, making meals, being obedient to God in all the works that my hands touch.

Top five reasons to know the importance of working for God

1. Work for God because it grows your faith

One of the best parts about growing in faith as believers we are always learning. Think about a time when you read a passage in your bible then the next time you read it, it is as if you have never seen it before! How amazing is it when we are in certain season that specific verses jump out at us. AS if those verses were written to relate to your life in that moment(because God loves to do that). Isn’t that so sweet? I find this connection with God to be absolutely beautiful and personal in the relationship we have with him.

If you are reading this and you have not felt that way before I encourage you to dig deep into your bible and continue reading. I pray and know God will show up for you.

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” -Matthew 7: 7-8.

Growing in your faith as a mom is a way of working for God and not for men. Being a mother is to pursue a motherhood ministry. The ministry of raising children in the direction in which they will go. “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” -Proverbs 22:6.

Before you raise Children to know God. You must know God yourself. No, that will not look perfect. As a mother you might grow tired, you will have sleepless nights, you might be exhausted in this season. It is an honor to grow in the relationship we have with God. He is our strength when we are weak. The importance of working for God is an act of obedience.

2. Surrender

We must surrender. In other words, submit to authority (aka God). How can we surrender to God? First, is by giving your life to Christ (read Romans 8). By surrendering your life are to do so in all areas of life, not just some.

Surrender all areas of your life. Yes, motherhood too. Surrender the finances, your agenda, control, and the situations in your life to God. Surrendering can be as simple as a declaration and prayer to God. But sometimes when we surrender we pray and don’t move. Sometimes we are called to be still. For example, praying and surrendering worries about a health concern that is out of our control.

Somethings we have are in our control. Let’s say you are surrendering finances. Surrendering to God is submitting it to him and trusting he is the provider. God gives us permission to steward our finances. It doesn’t mean, “Oh let’s go buy whatever we want. I know God will provide.” He will provide all you need. Yet, he also trusts us to be good stewards with our money. For some(me) it doesn’t come easy. It takes work surrendering my agenda or wants for the meantime. Creating a budget in this case.

I explain that to say sometimes surrender doesn’t always feel great because we are submitted to authority. But being submitted to authority is glorifying God with our works by being obedient to His will, not ours.

3. Trusting God

Let’s have more faith and trust Him. The more I trust God the more willing I am to let go of my tight hands of control. The importance of working for God is an act of trusting him. It is an act of worship. Trusting God with your kids. Trusting God in the day ahead of us. Trusting goes hand in hand with surrendering our own plans, and the agenda for God will be done.

4. Don’t seek to be rewarded by people

I find myself guilty of working for other people. Trying to get recognition or get something in return can be a battle. When really working for God is not about receiving a reward in the moment from other people. It is time to grasp a new perspective.

God sees the way you joyfully serve your family. The importance of working for God is for Him to get the Glory. In motherhood, we raise our kids to do good works. It makes us proud when our kids are successful or accomplish something great. But that is not a level of how successful you are as a parent. The reward is glorify God and working at everything at your best effort for others to seek the Glory of God not about us.

5. Honor God For All of Our Days

Lastly, working for Lord shouldn’t feel like “you have to.” To joyfully work for the Lord is an honor. In all the things to fill our days, we can joyfully serve God because we want to. Whether you are changing diapers, cooking dinner, or doing the duties of a working mom it is an honor to joyfully do those tasks for the Glory of God.

Yes, it can be hard sometimes. In those hard moments of being a mother. Let those moments be another opportunity to be in conversation with the Lord. The work you are doing is not always going to be glamorous. It might not seem fulfilling all the time. But in the long run, you are doing wonderful things in your home to glorify God. Truthfully, your children will see your love for God and will be inspired to want to serve Him like mom does.

A side note: It is so important to know the truth of who God is. Especially, if it feels like you have not felt the presence of God. Read that sentence again! As believers of Jesus, we must stand firm on the foundation of our Lord. But on the full armor of God through any battle, you face as you work for the Lord all the days of your life.

“Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.  Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. ” – Ephesians 6: 11-16.

With all of our days, we can know the importance of working for God and not for me. In motherhood, some days will be hard. Some days will be easier than others. However, as moms, we only get a short amount of time(so it seems) to raise our children to also know the importance of working for God.

Overall, working for God is allowing God to be in every area of your life. I pray this post is inspiring and encouraging to you as you grow in your relationship with God. May he be glorified forever and ever.
