Can motherhood be a ministry?

Motherhood: A journey of growing a small little human to be a strong man and woman of God(at least this is how I think of it). Just as Proverbs 22:6 encourages us to train up a child in the way he should go. Raising a child is extremely important. Raising a child to follow God doesn’t have to be in an extreme legalistic household about do’s and don’t. As parents we must stay true to the Word of God and be relational human beings to fulfill The Great Commission(Matthew 28).

“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6

Before you can teach your children about who God is and how much God loves them. You must know how much God loves you as His daughter FIRST. Your identity is in Christ alone! Yes, you have the title as a mother. You also have the title of many other things as well. For example, sister, wife, insert job title, neighbor, Christian, etc. you get the point. Being a mother brings so much joy but isn’t the “be all end all.” However, this is the season God has called you to walk so let’s Glorify him in it.

The “Mother Title” starts with The “Daughter Title”

Being a follower of Jesus must come first in leading your children to know the heavenly Father. This does not mean you need to memorize every scripture in the bible before ministering to your kids. The best way for your kids to see what a good personal relationship with our heavenly Father looks like is by how they see mommy or daddy’s relationship with God the Father.

A way to be in a relationship with Jesus regardless if you have been a follower for a long time or are just starting your faith journey.

Here are some ways to dig deeper into your relationship with God:

Pray and give thanks to God for being such a great God. The best advice I can give to you is to pray to God all the time. Pray without ceasing(1 Thessalonians 5:17). If you are a new believer in Jesus you might hear that you should have quiet time in the mornings. Yes, you should. The second question you might be asking is, “but how do I do that when I have kids?”

Your “quiet time” might look different than it used to look. Before I was a mother my quiet time would be perfectly set up with worship music lightly playing in the background. A nice cup of Hot Coffee(yes hot coffee) with my journal and pin as I opened up my bible. I would read and journal for as long as I wanted…now that is not the case (at least not all the time).

Now my quiet time in motherhood looks different. I now have to make it a priority in my schedule. I know my little baby will wake up at 8:00am. Therefore, I wake up 1 hour early. No I don’t read for an hour. I have a set morning routine, allowing my to wake myself with a skin care routine, water, a quick small bit to eat, and of course a big cup of coffee. From there I aim to do about 5 minutes of pray time, 5 minutes of reading, and finish off with 5 minutes of journalling.

I wanted to emphasize that to first give you mama’s so grace. Spending time with God does not look the same for everyone. It doesn’t have to be a long drawn out time. I simply do 15 minutes, well because that is what works for me. But I will say it’s not just a check off the to-do list to get it done. I crave the time because it sets my day off well as I invite God in through prayer on the day ahead. I encourage you to do the same.

For the mom out there who has a little one that seem to always wake up before her. Its okay. Quiet time doesn’t always have to be quiet. You don’t have to hide that you’re reading the bible. You are welcomed to invite your kids in as you read. Or listen to the bible as you do the house chores. These are just a few examples of how to be in relationship with Jesus as we set up the importance of a motherhood ministry and motherhood ministry ideas to teach your children about God.

Making a motherhood ministry is by showing the love of God.

1.Be a Mother who knows God

They’re so many ways to share the love of God in the home to fulfill a motherhood ministry. One way and the most important of them all(because they all feed off each other) is for the mother to have a personal relationship with the Lord. It doesn’t have to be perfect. and I promise you it won’t be. Let your children see it. God will teach you everything you need. He will guide your steps and equip you.

“Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sought, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.” Hebrews 13: 20-21.

2. Prayer is Everything

Bring prayer into the home. To be a family who prays to God, brings favor and connection with one another. A great way to start praying regularly is to pray before meals. I encourage you to have this prayer time to be a space where everyone in the family can participate. A different person can pray over each meal you have. Ask one of your kids to pray over lunch. The next meal you can ask another one of your kids to pray.

“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.” -Philippians 4:6

Another time to pray is before going to bed. Adding prayer time to the nighttime routine will help create a good habit for you and the kids. You’ll be surprised how they will keep you accountable and ask you to pray before bed for nights if you forget.

Make prayer personal. Having a scripted prayer can be helpful for the kids to learn to pray. Once they are comfortable encourage the to pray about anything and everything. Because God is in it all.

3. Relationships

We learn that God is love, right? (Romans 8:39). We are meant to fulfill the great commission. This includes your kids and spouse. trusting. Need a good book about relationships with God is He still Speaks by Wayne Drain and Tom Lane and He Still Speaks To Kids by Wayne Drain and Tom Lane.

If you’re married you need to love your spouse after God. Kids need to see how a healthy and good marriage operates. Of course, your marriage will never be perfect. But as we are in a relationship with Jesus, and submitted to his authority so are the kids submitted to their parents.

Having healthy relationships takes work. Work that allows your home to flourish.

4.Worship

Awww worship. My absolute favorite. No, I am not a musician or even a good singer. When I sing you want to turn the music up louder(and it’s okay with me). Sing of how good the Lord is. Event your kids to sing with you. The church is not the only place to worship. Play worship music while your family is enjoying breakfast. Really play music whenever. They’re so many different types of worship music and great fun sing along songs for kids. If you need some great worship music bands my favorites are: Bethel Worship, Maverick City Music, and Tribl. For the Kids: Hillsong Young and Free and Gateway Worship Kids.

5.Read Together.

Reading the bible together is probably the best way to bring God into the home by going to the source itself. Now, there are many ways to do this. One way, like many others, is to make it part of a nighttime routine. I would encourage a children’s bible or one appropriate for the age of your child. Children’s bible books are wonderful for new believers(even parent’s who are new believers) to understand the word. I personally have found it helpful and have learned a lot from children’s books even as an adult.

I have tons of friends who do family devotionals. Of course, do what is natural and best for your family. If this is once a week or a few nights a week. It will not always go smoothly but reading the word together is a great way to focus your motherhood ministry on Jesus.

6.Have conversations about the bible

Once reading the bible, as you might know the bible has some WILD stories within it. There is no way to get through reading and not have questions. So talk about them? I will advice as parents or mothers you won’t always know the answers to the questions your kids ask. They sure can come up with some incredibly good thoughtful questions. It is okay to say you do not have the answer to it right now. You can dig a little deeper to find out the answer. Sometimes questions do not have the answer that we know and maybe (just maybe) we do not have to know everything. Whelp, because we need God because he is all-knowing.

Conversations are also meant to be led on how the Holy Spirit is speaking to us through prayer with the Father. As you and your family mature in your faith. I encourage you to take a step of faith to ask, “What the Holy Spirit is saying to you through reading the bible?”

7.Share God

Being a believer in Jesus sets you apart. Because of this, you have a divine purpose for God. In your purpose. You are called to share the gospel of Jesus Christ. How do we do that you shall ask? There are endless ways to do this. In fact, I won’t be able to list them all because the Holy Spirit will guide you more than I ever can.

“When a person places faith in Jesus Christ and becomes a believer, he is sanctified—that is, set apart for God’s purpose.“-Romans 12:1-3.

Remember when I said that your kids will see you and your relationship with God? Well, it’s also the same with everyone else. Being loving towards other people because God has loved you. Smiling as people. Doing an act of kindness. Praying for people. Being gentle and loving. These are great practices for your kids to practice on each other but also for people, they don’t know too.

8. Memory Verses

Meditating on scripture is a game changer. I have found it extremely helpful to know the Father’s language and write his words on my heart. Have a memory verse each week for you and the kids to learn. Learn verses will help know God and deeper level. Also comes in handy to self encouragement and to give to others.

It is also great to stand on the promises of God. Memorize his truths and promises about you. His words are powerful. Therefore, so are yours.

Motherhood is a ministry and the Father has blessed you to be the mother of the children that you have for a reason to raise them up. Guess what you are not alone. There are lots of other mothers out there that want to partner alongside the motherhood ministry, in fact, give us a follow on Instagram or join the FB community where we get to pray with and for one another.
